King George Secondary

The WEConnect phase of public engagement on the West End Community Hub renewal project concluded in 2024; however, an expanded and seismically upgraded King George Secondary School remains a top priority for the VSB.

King George Secondary (West End Community Hub Renewal)

The will be redeveloped to meet the growing needs of the West End neighbourhood. The Hub includes King George Secondary School, the West End Community Centre, Joe Fortes Library, and other important civic facilities. The West End Community Hub Renewal Plan guides the future of the site’s buildings, programming and outdoor spaces. Work has been completed, with public input,  to develop principles for the plan, identify space needs, explore various possible options, and identify a preferred option. Work to secure funding for this renewal continues, and construction will not start until funding is secured. Construction will need to be implemented through multiple phases and capital plans, based on funding and renewal priorities. 

King George has been prioritized in Year 1 of the Board Capital Plan. There is consensus about the need for a larger school at the King George site to accommodate enrolment growth.

Current Status

    • King George Secondary is the smallest secondary school in the District, with space for 375 students.
    • KGSS has a capacity for only 375 students, but it operated with 623 Students, or at 166% capacity during the 2025-26 school year.
    • Enrolment forecasts indicate a new school at the King George site will need to accommodate approximately 1500 students.
    • King George was built in 1963 and is at high risk in a seismic event. The project was identified in Year 1 of the 2027/2028 Capital Plan Submission. 
    • Government funding has not yet been committed for a new school at the King George site.
    • Students attending King George are mostly from elementary schools in the area including Lord Roberts Elementary, Elsie Roy Elementary and Crosstown Elementary.
    • In the future, students from Coal Harbour and the new K-7 school at the Lord Roberts Annex site will attend King George Secondary as well.
    • The field space and tennis courts are operated by VSB and are exclusively used by King George secondary school students during school hours.
    • It is important to note, although a larger school is prioritized in the Capital Plan, no funding has been approved yet by the Ministry of Education.
