Hamber Secondary

Project Background  

Eric Hamber Secondary opened in 1962, and while the old school served Vancouver students well, the facility became outdated and presented a high-seismic risk in the event of an earthquake. In June 2018, Eric Hamber Secondary was approved for a seismic replacement of $106 million, making it the largest seismic project in Vancouver. The project was primarily funded by the Ministry of Education, with the District funding a portion of the auditorium and the City of Vancouver funding the 69-space child care centre for children under the age of five.

The replacement school is approximately 18,000 square meters and has the same operating capacity as before, with 1,700 students. The building also includes the first child care facility in a VSB secondary school. The 69-space child care is located separately on the top floor and managed by the City of Vancouver.  


In addition to the 37 general classrooms and 10 science classrooms, the replacement school includes an auditorium, a drama studio, two gymnasiums with change rooms, a large common area, a health and fitness studio, a weight room, home economic labs, music rooms, a library and other learning spaces designed for students with complex needs.

The replacement school incorporates 21st Century design to optimize flexible learning spaces and maximize collaboration. The building is built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standards and meets today’s benchmark for modern learning, safety, accessibility and sustainability.

The replacement school features 自拍流出 designs throughout the building including a 16 ft. welcome figure carved by artist Brent Sparrow of the Musqueam Nation and weaving designs on the walls of Hamber created by Brent’s Auntie, Debrah Sparrow.  

About the welcome figure 

  • The female welcome figure, carved by Musqueam artist Brent Sparrow, was intentionally placed at the front of the school to signify a traditional Musqueam welcome onto the school grounds and the unceded and traditional territory of the Musqueam people. Female welcome figure represents the significance of how Musqueam women are the symbol of the true matriarch. The women in Musqueam culture are the true knowledge keepers, caretakers and teachers. 

About the weaving designs  

  • The designs were inspired by the concept of weaving and incorporate traditional Musqueam colors—yellow, blue, green, and red—honoring and reflecting Musqueam cultural traditions. The weaving designs tell stories of Musqueam history, traditions and culture and further Debra Sparrow’s work in both Blanketing the city of Vancouver and VSB schools. 

The old school building may be used as a swing site for other school seismic upgrade projects if funding for these projects becomes available. When the existing school is not required anymore, the intention is to demolish the existing school building and build a playing field (subject to funding).
